The MOSAIC SCULPTURES are found objects that I encrust in art glass, stones, sea creatures, bullet shells, ball bearings, semi precious stones and other materials I source from a million different places and it is an integral part of my art process.
The forms pertain to the body such as a torso, head, chest and chosen for their inherent beauty of shape and intriguing presents.
The human body as art and body decoration appears in every culture and is used for seduction, ritual, social standing and threat. My body art sculptures are inspired from this cultural phenomenon and the forms and materials that surround me in my studio.
All CHICAGO MOSAICS projects are site specific and unique to this site. Respect to the client or designer's vision, the environment of the piece and its visual impact are crucial to each creation. Our goal is to ensure a mosaic project which will be a lasting and harmonious addition to our client's home, garden or commercial space.
Each mosaic is fit together piece-by-piece and grouted with care by Francine and apprentice artists. She combines ceramic and porcelain tile, stone, marble, stained glass, geode slices, river stones, metal pieces and other miscellaneous objects of your liking to compose a striking visual façade or art piece in your space.
The process of creating my sculptural mosaics is a long road from choosing art glass colors, stones, shells, brass bullet casings, glass eyes, metal findings and all kinds of unusual and interesting pieces that could be used in a mosaic. The forms are collected from various places and are chosen for their unique shape and physical presents. Collecting these things is a big part of my art making process.
Commissions are a little different. Being connected to the goal of the mosaic piece, client vision and the site for the mosaic is key to making a harmonious art piece for a home or commercial application. I work closely with the people who will live with the piece or the designer who has commissioned it. I offer a complementary meeting to discuss the work, show possible materials and brainstorm the idea of a mosaic.
Many hands and minds work to create and install a one of a kind mosaic. It is truly a handmade and unique art form that adds visual beauty and curiosity to any environment.
